Low Back Pain

Low back pain is one of the most common types of pain and discomfort treated by physical therapy clinics. In addition, back pain and stiffness are also some of the most searched words among those looking to begin physical therapy treatments and their local clinics.

What is back pain/low back pain?

Low back pain is a symptom that can originate from several underlying conditions such as a bulging or herniated disc, pinched nerves, poor posture, muscle tension, sprained muscles or ligaments in the spine, arthritis of the spine, joint compression, weakness in abdominal and spinal muscles, muscle imbalance in hips, and many other sources of discomfort.

Because of the variety of causes and possible courses of healing, there is not one specific treatment for back pain. At Advance Therapy, we provide the most comprehensive approach to assess and treat low back pain, getting down to the source of pain and finding the underlying cause, which then helps the patients’ physical therapist provide the most effective treatment technique(s).

What are the types of treatment for low back pain?

Common treatments would include:

  • Addressing the muscle imbalances
  • Strengthening the weak muscles of the spine or hips and legs
  • Improving mobility of spine and hips
  • Reducing tension and tightness in pelvic and lumbar muscles
  • Addressing stiffness in SI joint
  • Manual therapy interventions to improve spine mobility
  • Exercises for decompression of a bulging disc
  • Exercises improving lumbar stabilization (commonly called “core muscles”) for weak back
  • Electrical modalities to relieve pain and muscle spasms
  • Aqua therapy can be used to create traction in the spine while reducing the weight load on discs -enabling pain-free movements

While this list is extensive, there are various other exercises that can be used to help relieve and treat both long and short-term pain in the back.

How soon will I notice the results?

While healing time and results vary based on the severity of the case, many of the patients being treated for low back pain at Advance Therapy have found partial or full relief within five visits after starting treatments. Our staff is widely skilled at locating the source of back pain for the patients and working to strengthen the muscles or increase a patient’s flexibility for pain relief to be permanent.
