Dry needling differs from acupuncture, being performed by different specialists with extended learning and certifications. Acupuncture is based on Eastern medicine, while dry needling is rooted in Western medicine and research conducted on the evaluation of the patterns of pain and the overall movement and function of the body.

Trigger points are localized areas of the body in which muscles contract and cause disrupted function or restricted motion, often leading to localized pain and tenderness.
